I began buying HEAVY METAL magazine when it was first introduced in our country (it is based on the French magazine METAL HURLANT), and when I saw the first HEAVY METAL movie in its theatrical release, I considered it a attractive favorable representation of the magazine–funny, bizarre, sexy in a prankish device, and originate to various types of artistic interpretation. The DVD of HEAVY METAL appeals to me because it preserves the characteristics that made those early years of the magazine special.
HEAVY METAL 2000, however, is dinky more than a vanity project for Julie Strain, the wife of the fresh publisher of HEAVY METAL and one of the producers of the film, Kevin Eastman. One would assume that Eastman, who gained fame as one of the creators of the recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, would explain a novel HEAVY METAL film that would have the same qualities as the unique. But where HM offers violence to illustrate the depth of unpleasant, HM2K focusses on the gore. Where HM offers a forum for various stylistic approaches, HM2K offers jarring combinations of animation techniques. Where HM tantalizes viewers with sexuality, HM2K invites us to seek. HM2K defines “gratuitous” in every scene and, in doing so, seemingly confirms every dirty stereotype about arrested adolescence in grown-ups who read comics. The only redeemable allotment of the HM2K DVD is the bio on Julie Strain–the pure unintended camp of the share is captivating. But HM2K as a whole offers a predictable tale with affirm acting less inspiring than the standard digital recording on an answering machine. If you’re looking for a current sci-fi movie that captures the brilliant, satirical and adventurous spirit of the first HM movie, assume STARSHIP TROOPERS. HM2K did not regain theatrical distribution for a reason, folks. Acquire the hint.
I give this item two stars because the movies are bundled together. HM by itself is worth four stars, and HM2K deserves none.
Heavy Metal 2000: About 15 years ago two guys came up with a cute concept about turtles in a sewer who turn into dauntless ninjas. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were born and became the Beanie babies of their time — vastly overrated, trendy, and Suitable. So what does this have to do with Heavy Metal 2000? Well, TMNT gave those creators gargantuan names in the laughable book industry as well as vast bank accounts. One of them, Kevin Eastman, former his sizable name to become Editor of Heavy Metal magazine and his colossal money to marry stale Penthouse Pet of the Year Julie Strain. So how does geekboy hold his nude-model bride blissful? He uses his magazine to promote/worship her at every turn. Eastman wrote the fable which became Heavy Metal 2000, his company made the movie, and his wife is the star. Hmmm… something smells fishy here and I don’t believe it’s Julie Strain-Eastman this time. This inbred, self-promoting aspect is the biggest quandary (among several) that this movie has. Not only do you have the writer’s wife as the star, you also have things like billboards in the site place saying, “Play Heavy Metal 2000: FAKK2 The Video Game!” The carry out is jarring and annoying and makes your suspension of disbelief difficult. It would be like seeing a notice in the background of Phantom Menace saying, “Star Wars fragment II coming soon!” You are trying to forget you are watching a movie and this reminds you that you are. The storyline is extremely simple and about as linear as you can accumulate. There is one microscopic twist at the demolish but it is neither surprising nor clever. Don’t ogle for any subplots here because you won’t derive any. Recall out the T&A and tone down the violence and this is a Saturday morning cartoon. A simple storyline might have been okay if it were at least logical. In one scene Julie (the character’s name as well as the actor’s) tries to destroy the villain in a bar. She stands up with her two pistols in front of the villain and three accomplices, all armed with automatic weapons, and doesn’t accumulate hit with a single bullet until the villain’s FINAL bullet hits her in the arm. Once that shot winged her all four guys stopped firing — remarkably convenient. But it gets worse. Shortly afterward the villain asks for a hooker and Julie walks in to try a second assassination. But the villain recognizes her when he moves the hair away from her eyes! OH NO! She’s dumb meat, proper? Nope. He seems mildly terrified and says, “You! What do you want? ” When she says she wants immortality he says it comes with a tag then rips her top off and goes to work on her chest. HUH?!?! I guess this guy really, REALLY doesn’t maintain a grudge! He is actually surprised when she tries to waste him again, for the second time in about an hour! Someone else said the CGI and standard animation were blended seamlessly. I’m not determined what they were watching. Great of the animation is apt and SOME of the CGI is well done. But at the climax there is a surprise villain who appears who is all CGI. The guys who couldn’t acquire a job on Reboot must have gotten the HM2000 job, because this CGI villain looks like an amateur version of the Reboot villain. Unpleasant. Mrs. Eastman voices the main character about as well as she acts in those “Savage Beach” movies.I’m running out of set so I’ll wrap this up. Two stars for the movie. The extras are quite pleasurable, even though there is more wife-worship with the “Julie Strain, Supergoddess” feature. That segment actually has the highlight of the entire DVD — a very revealing shot of Julie’s “protege” Arban Arnalis. She is HOT! FstFwd to 8:40 and grasp a gander. If one of these two is a supergoddess it’s Arban. The extras fetch 4 stars, but so what? This is like a dreadful pizza with really generous pepperoni on top, so the estimable extras don’t raise the final accept — TWO STARS.

Heavy Metal: Very superb animation for its time, a variety of stories of differing quality (mostly valid to very top-notch), splendid soundtrack, and no shameless self-promotion. This is Distinguished better than HM2000. Then again, Heavy Metal magazine was distinguished better succor then than it is now. Maybe there’s a connection. Comparing the two HM movies is like comparing Toy Narrative to the straight-to-video Buzz Lightyear cartoon. In fact, HM2000 did go straight to video while the first Heavy Metal is a classic of adult animiation. This DVD would be a nice fragment of any SF and/or animation fan’s collection. It’s a suitable, frosty, fun SF movie and I recommend you recall this one on its hold. But it ain’t The Godfather so it only gets THREE+ STARS. I haven’t watched the extras yet but there are deleted scenes so they should be sterling and may have bumped it to 4 stars.
The boxed location averages out to 3 STARS but skip the boxed site unless you are a completist, have lots of money, or really want to score a nice spy of Arban Arnalis (and you can rent HM2000 for that) .

A lot can be said for the first 4 seasons of the prove.Season 5 is composed strong I totally Like every episode. There is NO other TV expose that I will look over again but this one. I have seen each episode multiple times. The thing I bask in the most is what I call the “time release” impress of humor. There are so many subtle things going on that there is no method to accept them in one viewing. If you don’t have me try it. Notice your fave episode again and sight if you don’t fetch another spacious “line” or spoofy interaction that you didn’t sight before. This stuff is vivid!!
This unbiased proves the ill attitudes of the general public. So hasty to lay judgment. This demonstrate is Radiant. And when I’m done watching it always always always leaves me wanting more. Every single comedy I’ve ever seen has had more dramatic episodes (And now.. a very special Blossom) It makes the characters more steady. And the comments above about how it was painful to scrutinize and embarrassing. That is the appeal of Micheal’s character. He gets into these positions where he does embarrass himself. Its unbiased in his nature. Unbiased be tickled they are not trying to bellow you a lesson in the prove like so many comedies before them. Touching briefly on a serious issues only to forget about it the next episode. THAT’S Painful..

Well, I’ve seen the extended version, and even if they added only 12 minutes, out of a possible forty I guess, it mild makes so noteworthy more sense now it is totally worth it. Kudos to the editors gradual this reconstruction. I didn’t have any pickle following any of it, and I’m not really radiant at complicated plots. All the main outlines of the drama became extremely incandescent and clear; the tension between the Confederates and the Union soldiers; the spot about the French army; the massacre of the family at the beginning that causes Major Dundee to go all medieval and turn over roar at the prison to his skeptical sub-lieutenant. “Maybe there’s a reason why you’re a jailer, not a soldier, Amos.” They sustain saying this as though being a jailer were something bad.

Charlton Heston’s descent into a delirium of infection is painful to deal with, very accurate. Now we stare him drawn to the Mexican woman who brings him food; he’s so out of it he finds himself having sex with her for the comfort it brings, and then of all times that’s when Senta Berger shows up at his door on her bear mission of mercy. She sees the naked encourage of the Mexican woman and you can survey the harm in her eyes. Heston’s glowing covered up but you regain the characterize, and he’s man enough not to lie about what happened.
Richard Harris looks tremendous and brings a rebel energy to the movie. Warren Oates’ death scene is pure poetry, shot through with genius. What a ham he is! And oh, that is ham deluxe, 100 percent pure gold!

Michael Anderson, Jr. is top-notch in his role as the young bugler, so distinguished better here than in his other parts. He’s sort of playing the Claude Jarman role, or maybe the allotment Brandon De Wilde played in IN HARMS Intention. The scenes where he meets Begonia Palacios in the ruined town where Senta Berger works as a doctor are credible and hilarious because he’s so powerful in lust he can’t gawk anything else but “Linda.” Equally amusing is the aftermath of the skirmish in which he’s been shot in the butt and then they try to fix him up by tearing out the seat of his pants and stitching up what looks like his bare ass (kind of plucky nudity for 1965) . Anderson’s got game and you can gawk why Peckinpah made him so prominent in this movie.
[SPOILER]
The chronology straightens itself out and before long we reach to the scene where the troops fetch the crucified corpse of their Indian scout, whose trustworthiness the previous version had left in doubt. Somehow it is nice, after all these forty years, to have at least one MAJOR DUNDEE mystery cleared up, and also to salvage that that Riago was exact after all!
[END OF SPOILER.]
At the demolish a whole bunch of us (film geeks I request) clapped at the final credits. PS, the current music is outstanding, though I’m glkad the forthcoming DVD will give you the option to hear the obsolete sing-along theme too.
This is another one of those films which I could only faintly retract from childhood. Recently I was fortunate to idea a shrimp urge of this firm in its recent revised format. Having also seen the older version recently I am able to compare and inequity both versions of this curious film. The biggest change distinguished in the revised edition is the music. A original regain has been created and this completely changes the mood of the entire movie. The outmoded procure was a quirky, sardonic affair with the opening credits leading off with Mitch Miller’s say along gang! A sizable incompatibility from the symphonic version we have here. If you are one of those people who don’t observe movie music that noteworthy, try viewing the same film twice with two different scores! The music can execute a grand contrast in how a movie feels to its viewer. We certainly have that here.
In addition to the fetch, about 13 minutes of footage has been restored. Dundee was one of those films that was butchered on the editing floor, so powerful so that there has been a intelligent debate about this ever since it was released help in the 1960s. Apparently almost an hour was chop out, and while 13 minutes does not seem a lot in comparison it can create a dissimilarity. Some of the restored scenes include showing the Confederates being captured as they try to escpae in the beginning, as well as showing Heston enthusiastic with the Mexican woman before the Austrian lady returns to inspect how he has recovered from his afflict. Shrimp stuff, but it can add up.
The background for this film is Heston (Dundee) putting together a scratch Troop of cavalry to pursue a renegade group of raiding Apaches. His unlikely tell includes Confederate POWS, Blacks, and assorted riff-raff. The Rebels are commanded by Captain Tyreen (Richard Harris) an embittered rival of Dundee from before the Civil War. The tension between these two is what makes the movie. But there are many other edgy touches that assume this out of the ordinary Western genre. The tensions between the two officers are mirrowed by their men, and it is a miracle that this divided suppose can effect anything at all. In fact, nothing like this could have functioned in reality! What makes this more than objective another Western flick is the fact that Dundee’s teach has to fight two battles at once: One against the Apache, and the other against the French in Mexico.
This film has some fascinating historical background. During the American Civil War Louis Napolean III decided to exploit the events taking position in North America by installing Maximillian Von Hapsburg (an Austrian archduke) as a French Puppet ruler in Mexico. In preceeding years Mexico had race up principal debts to various European powers and this was dilapidated as pretext to intervene. Dundee’s say, after destroying the Apaches must contend with the pursueing French. We have a classic cavalry action in which the European and American styles of cavalry fighting are shown for this period. Dundee’s boys have Henry repeating rifles which gives them a massive firepower advantage over the French Lancers. They also have a miniature horse drawn section of light artillery. The French Lancers are shown to be a bit cloddish in this film, in reality American cavalry in this period was tiny more than mounted infantry. Dundee and co. hack and shot their scheme throw a troop of French Lancers at the Rio Grande losing about 3/4 of their men in the process! Its total fiction, but a gigantic finale! This skirmish is well worth the wait, there is some bright cavalry saber and pistol action here. This is one the few films that deals with the French intervention in Mexico, although Vera Cruz and Juarez also mask this subject.
Overall, Major Dundee is a fine titanic film. It was safe before, but is now even better. The film does digress sometimes, and wanders astray, but the atmosphere and tension between Heston and Harris always bring it encourage. Some reviwers have made comparisons to the Viet Nam War, since the film came out during that time. I fail to notice any analogy here! Unprejudiced because the film came out around 1965 does not mean that it is social commentary on Nam! Can we as Americans ever collect over this! This film is not about Nam, its about action and adventure on the Mexican border during the American Civil War. Period! The acting and production value are enormous. Fans of Peckenpah, Heston and Harris should admire it. This is also not your typical Western which is what makes it provocative as well. Viva Dundee!

“The Reader” deserved its Oscar for best actress, but it also deserved the Oscar for best film (it lost to the contaminated “Slumdog Millionaire.”) It tells the narrative of a young man growing up in post-war Germany who has an affair with a mysterious older woman. Without spoiling too grand, the fable ends up touching on the holocaust, how mighty we can blame participants, and whether or not esteem transcends these historical inconvenience.
Normally, I detest holocaust films. I earn that Hollywood too often beats us over the head with the “it’s Abominable” message (This Honest In! Hollywood Geniuses Witness Holocaust Was Dreadful!) as opposed to mining the worthy more enchanting tales of personal struggle, loss, redemption, and ignorance. “The Reader” offers an smart, probing, and insightful search for at the human costs on those who were not relate victims, and on the society of post-war Germany at gigantic. It also tells a heck of a fancy record, to boot.

I felt so respected by the makers of this film. There is no heavy-handed moralizing, in fact, the message of the film seems to be that, while of course there are titanic fair wrongs that have been perpetrated, there are lesser consequences which do not do it into history books, but do have an impact on true people and deal them trusty wretchedness that ought to be respected.
As mentioned in other reviews, this is not a movie for the kids, at least not kids who unruffled titter when they gawk nudity on mask. The first half of the film is consumed by a lusty affair between a 32 year former and a 15 year outmoded. It’s not for immature audiences.
The Blu-Ray:
On the opening scene, I opinion this film must be shot on digital. The source was honest too shapely, with slight to no film grain in evidence. Upon further research, however, I have discovered that it was indeed shot on Kodak Vision2 and Vision3 film – which Kodak advertises as producing less grain in outrageous light and in general. Given this, and the fact that detail is generally so strong in this image, I can only grasp that this Blu-Ray has been mastered without excessive Digital Noise Reduction.
It is a radiant 1.85:1 image which suits nice widescreen displays beautifully. Dim levels are strong, loads of detail is evident in shadows, and colors are extremely naturalistic. There are many moments that offer the sort of “3-D” realism that the best HD can give. The quality of the image adds immediacy and impact to the already titillating film.
Audio is very dialogue driven. This is not a BD that will rock your neighbors.
Extras are very strong. 42 minutes (!) of deleted scenes are presented in 480p widescreen. I watched them all, and I would say only one lop was truly glum – a itsy-bitsy bit of backstory for Michael’s law professor that would have added depth to the anecdote. Mini-documentaries are also available, touching on the writing and casting process, as well as Kate Winslet’s aging with make-up. Overall, it’s a very strong slate of extras.
*********
Any fan of serious dramas and romances would do quite well to assume this up. It’s a truly big movie that is very affecting and also plan provoking. It’s a monument to respecting the viewer, allowing them to digest complex morality without beating them over the head with a “message.” I would compare it to films like “The English Patient” or “I’ve Loved You So Long” (another 2008 Oscar Nominee) .
It is also presented in an exceedingly glorious HD transfer and a strong package of extras. Certainly, if you’re doing a discover of 2008 Oscar nominees, you should consume this up over the trite, pat Hollywood fare of “Slumdog.” It’s also better than the very wonderful, but somewhat flabby “Benjamin Button,” and the pleasant, but not as brainy “Milk.” I can’t recommend it enough.
To be distinct from the beginning, this is not a movie for family viewing. Throughout mighty of the early portions of the film viewers are treated to relatively graphic nudity for both Kate Winslet and the young man (David Kross) that plays the younger version of Ralph Fiennes.
The film covers the record of Hanna (Winslet) and Michael (Fiennes/Kross) and their relationship and lives. The setting is NOT World War II, but is actually post WWII, starting in 1958, as well as portions spot in the 60’s and 70’s, up thru the 1990’s.
Rather than spoiling the tale, I’ll finish providing details on the myth there, and simply say it is quite consuming. The sage is based on a best-seller by Bernhard Schlink, and the filmed version features an award winning performance by Kate Winslet (Academy Award and Golden Globe) . On Blu-ray the film looks exquisite showing pleasurable detail and clarity. The audio quality is also kindly though the film is not an action-thriller and doesn’t feature the typical booming explosions and sound effects.
Most definitely worth viewing, but again not something that most families would conceal around younger family members. The R rating is most definitely deserved for the graphic nudity. The language is actually surprising super as the film focuses on the yarn rather than mixing in profanity honest for shock value. Not necessarily a film that will be watched repeatedly, but definitely a film worth viewing.

Without a doubt “The Mountain” made in 1956 is my all-time accepted film, mainly because of Spencer Tracy the all-time greatest Hollywood actor. There are many special qualities that this movie possesses which might not be appreciated after the first viewing. While watching examine that before any intros are displayed, the opening scene wastes microscopic time showing a plane in injure which then crashes, with large visual and audio effects, on top of a mountain. The two main characters (Spencer Tracy as “Zachary Teller” and Robert Wagner as “Christopher Teller”) are brothers that for reasons of capable vs. faulty resolve to climb the mountain to near the rupture of the crashed airliner. This becomes the basis of a amazing and novel site packed with emotion, adventure and spiritual meaning. Zachary wants to encourage Chris climb due to the disaster and the like for his brother but Chris wants to climb to capture the wearisome passenger’s possessions and hurry his life as a simple farm hand. One cannot abet but identify with Zachary’s struggle to convince Chris that what he is doing is cross as indicated by the following line stated before the climb began: “You want me to choose you up to the top of the mountain in the contemplate of God so that you can retract the pockets of unimaginative people? Isn’t there anything inside of you that tells you its sinful? ” Chris then responds “I’d do worse than that to score out of here”, thereby setting the stage for a “clash of wills”. For those who have not seen the film I will not say how it ends as I wish that all who read this review who have not seen it can one day give it a survey. It has lovely scenery of the French Alps and the countryside as well. Delight In and God bless.

I reflect I was 11 years old-fashioned when I first saw this film and now, 30 years later, it remains one of the most haunting cinematic experiences I’ve ever had. Some movies – like mammoth art in any do – objective don’t seem to age. Everything one could wish for in a first-class thriller is here: complex place and characters, fast-paced action, nail-biting suspense, incandescent photography, editing and direction together with some of the most suggestive scenes ever shown on the silver mask. The actors are apt too (with a few minor exceptions), especially Otto Wernicke (reprising his role in “M”) as Inspector Lohmann – the antithesis of the brutal and sadistic german officer/policeman so frequent in mainstream cinema. You have to go to Alfred Hitchcock’s best works to salvage anything that surpasses this film.
Made during the final chaotic months of the Weimar Republic by master director Fritz Lang (”Metropolis”, “M”) the movie was banned when the Nazis came to power in early 1933; it was to be Lang’s last work before leaving Germany. He directed a string of films in Hollywood and though some of them were quite well-behaved he never managed to advance the heights of filmmaking he had done during his German period, mainly because the American studio system didn’t give him the artistic freedom he had previously enjoyed.
The place revolves around the mysterious Dr. Mabuse, a criminal mastermind invented by the German author Norbert Jacques and made famed by Lang’s 1922 restful film “Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler”. A decade later we net the celebrated doctor locked away in an asylum. He hasn’t spoken a word for ten years, instead he is writing his “testament”, a detailed manual describing how to commit the most plain crimes, crimes that relieve no other purpose than to throw a law-abiding society into total chaos and anarchy. When the document starts to purchase concrete build in reality, Lohmann has to achieve the clues together in a most unique and horrifying case…

Now Criterion Collection has released this classic in an great two-disc edition. The film is presented – for the first time – in it’s current length and aspect ratio with restored image and sound. Describe quality is very good; I’ve only seen two DVD-releases of movies from this period with a better image (”42nd Street” and “The Ghoul”) . The report is intriguing and sure, almost without any specks or grain. Sound quality is worse, unfortunately. While spoken lines are distinct enough the sound-track suffers from background noice, which in a few scenes (not any of the primary ones, thank God) is very disturbing. I don’t think this a major spot though; the film is too enthralling for that. The language is German with optional English subtitles (easy to read) .
On the first disc – together with the film – is an insightful audio commentary by film historian David Kalat. Some might gain it a bit academic, but he provides fascinating information about – among other things – Lang’s storytelling techniques (parallels can be found today in movies like “Pulp Fiction” and “The Usual Suspects”) and points out that the film’s theme – once a metaphor for the Nazi movement rising in power – can objective as easily be applied to the modern international political site, regarding terrorism. The second disc contains the complete French-language version made simultaneosly by Lang with French actors, a couple of interviews with Lang, actor Rudolf Sch? ndler and German Mabuse expert Michael Farin, production earn drawings and a collection of memorabilia, press books, stills and posters.
Anyone even remotely enthusiastic in thrillers and/or movie history simply must peek this film. Forget that it’s German, forget that it’s over 70 years old; “The testament of Dr. Mabuse” is a timeless proof of that you don’t need a sizable budget and computorised special effects to acquire movie magic. With this edition Lang’s final masterpiece will hopefully salvage the credit it deserves. If you’re tired of overblown Hollywood productions with overpaid stars that (almost) never content what they promise, this one is for you. It’s the grandmother (”M” being the grandfather) of all current thrillers and detached a hell of a lot better than most of them. Pick it!!!

Don’t be do off that it is more than 70 years old; don’t be deterred because it is in German. “The Testament of Dr. Mabuse” can only be described as awesome — in the frail sense of the word. Many early sound motion pictures were talking plays. Fritz Lang, however, truly uses sound in all its aspects. For example, the very first scene creates tension by allowing us to hear only the clanking of a machine. We seek people talking, but we cannot hear what they are saying, because they are drowned out by the machine. The viewer knows something is happening, but does not know what. Lang makes effective utilize of sound throughout. The visuals are fabulous, too. We peer what a room looks like when illuminated only by a gunshot. We study spectacular fires.
The narrative may be 70 years musty, but it is as original as today’s headlines. Dr. Mabuse, now locked in a mental institution, directs the activities of a scare gang. The gangsters, who are ordinary criminals themselves, cannot understand the purpose of the crimes, which do not appear to be top-notch. The point is: the crimes are committed simply to cause apprehension. Once the population is fully frightened, the criminal empire can acquire over. The film was completed weeks after the Nazis took power and not surprisingly, Joseph Goebbels banned the film. Goebbels did allow it to be shown a few years later, after Otto Wernicke was filmed in a novel introduction which claimed that the events of the film occured a few years before (i.e., in the Weimar era.) While the film’s portrayal of a hypnotic leader can and did characterize Adolf Hitler, it also describes hypnotic terrorist leaders today. This memoir is novel.

The restoration is outstanding. Although this film is from the 1930s, there is no hissing or popping. The visuals are lustrous and appealing. Rudolf Klein Rogge, who portrays Dr. Mabuse, does not have remarkable to say, but his whispers will chill you to the bone. This is a masterpiece.

Movie Title: Dillinger Dillinger is available for streaming or downloading. |
Violent, intense and romantic memoir of unfriendly Depression era gangster, John Dillinger by eminent action / drama director John Milius is historically erroneous, but serene a very toothsome gangster film for fans of the genre….and a bonus to now have it available on DVD!!
Cerebral actor Warren Oates plays fiery John Dillinger with aplomb, and Ben Johnson is the valiant FBI agent Melvin Purvis, hot on the plod of America’s Public Enemy number 1. Dynamic abet cast portrays Dillinger’s gang…Harry Dean Stanton as Homer van Meter, Geoffrey Lewis as Harry Pierpoint and John Ryan is Charlie Mackley. Additionally, Richard Dreyfuss is the cowardly killer, Baby Face Nelson and Steve Kanaly plays the “Robin Hood of the Cookson Hills”, Stunning Boy Floyd.
Milius makes immense employ of color and monochrome shots (many portions of movie appear to be shot through a sepia colored filter) and moving newsreel gawk to selected sequences with hard edged jazz get accompanying the visuals. Film covers birth of gang and several high profile incidents including the deadly shoot out at Itsy-bitsy Bohemia lodge, plus Dillingers valorous race from Indiana’s Crown Point jail….and finally his comeuppance outside the Biograph Theatre in Chicago where he was shot plain by FBI agents.

If you like your gangster films snappily paced and with machine guns blazing…then this one belongs in your collection!!
Interesting footnote: It was argued for years that it wasn’t Dillinger shot dumb outside the Biograph, but rather a look-alike, petty thief named Jimmy Lawrence. Dillinger was apparently aware of the FBI place and decided to retire from the bank robbing game for grand. During the mid 1970’s a letter arrived at a Los Angelas newspaper, together with a photo of an outmoded man, the writer claimed to be Dillinger and the letter apparently contained information about Dillinger that was not freely available…nothing further was ever heard from the writer!
This is one of the fastest though-provoking movies you’re likely to ever peek. Warren Oates was the only man to play the fraction of John Dillinger (he even looks like him) . When Harry Dean Stanton says “things aren’t workin’ out for me today”, you gotta laugh. Whether it’s romanticized or not, who cares. It’s a fun movie to peer and if you like to eye lots of spent brass flyin’, you’ll fancy it. My only 2 regrets are that it’s not on DVD and that it’s recorded in the LP mode on the VHS.

This review is for the Criterion Collection DVD edition of the film.
Jamaica’s first feature film is also the most illustrious. The film made reggae music current in the US, influnced people to vout out the conservative government in Jamaica, and brought singer Jimmy Cliff to international stardom.
The film is about a young man aspired to become a distinguished singer. He performs for a characterize company, but is offered only $20 for the song. He thinks it is worth more but finally agrees on the $20. He later gets in wretchedness with the law and becomes even more eminent as an outlaw.

I strongly recommend that you behold the film with subtitles, as many of the characters suppose in a thick Patois accent.
The film has a R rating for profanity, violence, sexual teach, and nudity.
The soundtrack to the film remains a expansive hit even today and it is said that even Bob Marley would be an unknown if it weren’t for this film.

The criterion DVD has an unique interview with Chris Blackwell, the founder of Island Records.
There are also biographies and discographies of several musicians who helped witht he film’s music. It also has full-length audio commentary by actor Jimmy Cliff and Perry Henzell, who wrote and directed the film.
This film is a must witness for reggae music lovers!
I was extremely disappointed, on buying this DVD, to scrutinize that the unusual, restored version is not an anamorphic transfer. It blows my mind that in this day and age, a historic film like this would be restored, remastered and released without using the best possible format.

More’s the pity, as it appears that the exact transfer is an improvement over the earlier Criterion version. Nonetheless, this is an expensive “Deluxe” release, and those with widescreen TVs will undoubtedly want to wait until there is an anamorphic version (I should ticket that if you study this on a widescreen TV, and zoom in so the record fills the cover, you will not be able to read all the subtitles!) . Those without love home-theater equipment are probably better off looking for a obsolete copy of one of the previous releases.
It’s truly dismal that so worthy work was apparently place into the restoration of the valid film, and then a second-rate DVD was produced from it. I honestly can’t recommend this DVD for anyone, especially given the list note, and would recommend that people wait for (and examine) a definitive anamorphic release of this all-time classic.
